The Halifax Flour Society was formed on 1st May 1847. It was created as a co-operative corn mill following discontent at the Corn Laws, corn dealers prices and adulterated flour. The original mill at Bailey Hill became too small and a new six storey mill was built in 1862 and opened on 17th April 1863. It was considered one of the most modern mills at the time. The Society bought more land and a new mill was constructed and opened in 1880 on the site. The mill ceased flour production in the 1930s.
