Whether you are an individual collector with just a handful of items, or part of an organisation with a room full of photos, letters, diaries, drawings and documents, we can help you to understand what you have and advise on how to care for items and how to record what you have so you can easily find it.
We offer advice on conducting research and expanding your collection, and in making it available to the public. Or, if you don’t have your own mill collection but are just hypothetically interested in learning how to look after collections, you are also very welcome!
The workshop will be run by our qualified archivist, Nathanael Hodge, and our resident mill expert, miller and founder, Mildred Cookson. It will cover topics such as:
- Why keep records in the first place? And how to decide what to keep?
- How to arrange and describe records
- Physical preservation (with archive storage freebies)
- Digitisation and digital preservation
- Providing access to the collection
- Expanding your collection
- How we can help
Participants will be given a printed reference manual to take away. We will send you a full agenda nearer to the date of the workshop.
The workshop will take place on Monday 25th November, running from approximately 10am until 4pm here at our offices in Reading. Workshop sizes are limited so that you get as much interaction with the Archive team and fellow participants as possible, so booking early is essential.
The fee for individual Friends is £75 per person, which includes lunch and refreshments.
If you would like to attend on behalf of an organisation, our current Heritage Partners receive one free place and additional places at £50pp, and Corporate Friends receive three free places.
